Tour the Art Walk

LOS CABOS IS KNOWN FOR SUN AND SURF but there are some top-notch cultural activities to experience as well. One of my absolute favorites is the Art Walk in the Gallery District of San Jose del Cabo! The historic town where I live!

EVERY THURSDAY NIGHT from 5:00-9:00pm, from the end of October through the month of June, San Jose closes calle Álvaro Obregón, the main street of the Gallery District, to all auto traffic, creating a casual, open atelier atmosphere for locals and tourists alike.

Visit the Art Galleries

I love wandering down the cobblestone streets, popping in and out of the colorful art galleries, casually chatting with the artists, and shopping for Mexican folk art in the boutiques. Generally, wine or light refreshments are offered by many of the galleries, and live music from street musicians adds to the festive atmosphere.

THE FINE ART GALLERIES ON THE ART WALK display original paintings, sculpture, photography, prints, and beautiful hand-crafted jewelry by local, national and international contemporary artists. One of the most celebrated local artists here in Los Cabos is Ivan Guaderrama. I love the playful way he talks about his interactive paintings! TRUST ME, you need to experience Guaderrama and his art for yourself! Here is just one example from his moving Angel series:

THERE ARE COUNTLESS AMAZING GALLERIES here to investigate, and I soak in more on each visit. But I can’t leave the Art District until I have stopped into the Enrique Bascon Art Gallery. A Spanish artist from the Basque country but who now lives in Los Cabos, Bascon captures the most iconic people in Cabo, vendors we cross on the beach every time we go or people from the farms around town. And to see what magic he does with their faces; well, as you can see below, his art is powerfully unique.

YOU CAN’T GO TO HISTORIC SAN JOSE and not sample some of the delicious restaurants and bars tucked in between the art galleries.  I love the live band at the Baja Brewing Company and stopping in for a couple of beers on a warm evening is always a good thing. Then we usually move on to one of our favorite ways to finish a night on the Art Walk, with gourmet tacos at La Lupita! With their delicious foodie-creative taco menu and large selection of mezcal, what is not to love? Reservations are recommended on Thursday nights as we aren’t the only Art Walk visitors who love to stop there! {hint: you can miss the crowds by getting there to Lupita early and eat between 5-6pm, then head into the galleries for some shopping!}

    Thank you very much for your comment Elena. I have just discovered it today. It is a very nice gesture… Enrique, from the Enrique Bascon Gallery, in San Jose del Cabo.

    Looking for an artist in Cabo- bought a painting from her last year. Wondering if you have any idea of her name. On the bottom it’ looks like it’s signed Duhe ?? The painting is of a ballerina with a black background and she looks like her dress is fire. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
