Wedding Flowers: Anemones
Although somewhat challenging to pronounce, ANEMONES are delightfully whimsical flowers to incorporate into your wedding design. Anemones, pronounced “ah-nem-ah-knees” are sweet jewel-toned flowers with dramatic black eyes, delicate green eye lashes, and curly free-thinking green stems available from November to May. In Greek mythology, these delicate flowers are said to have sprung up from the blood that was shed by Aphrodite’s lover, Adonis, when he died. Desperately romantic from the start, and just perfect for passionate storytelling told through your flowers on your wedding day.
Believe it or not, Anemones are distant relatives of the beloved frilly Peony and ruffled Ranunculus, which may be why, when gathered together into a bouquet, those three blooms look so stunning! Although we design entire bridal bouquets with Anemones for a monochromatic display, just a few Anemone blooms add a blast of bright color to hand-tied posies and table centerpieces. Most often you will see a black and white themed wedding using the white Anemones en masse as the blooms are gorgeous in their classic black and white simplicity. And yet, as you can see from this photo from a wedding we designed at Esperanza, An Auberge Resort in Los Cabos, Mexico, we love working with Anemones in their deepest, most intense shades of red and magenta. Paired with other flowers in garnet red, hot pink, eggplant, and purple, the stylish Anemone really makes a statement! Don’t you think?
