Pro Golfer Rickie Fowler Weds Allison Stokke
AS SEEN IN VOGUE Pro Golfer Rickie Fowler wed Allison Stokke on the beach in Cabo San Lucas. Here’s the story, as it appeared in Vogue Magazine.
“Rickie, Justin Thomas, and I flew up to Southampton a few days early for the U.S. Open,” pole vaulter Allison Stokke remembers of how the pro golfer set a plan into motion for his proposal. She and Rickie coyly announced their relationship to the public in April 2017 when they both shared pictures from a Moto GP race they attended in Texas. The photos rocked the golf world, as Rickie had notoriously been the only single pro on the circuit for a while. (When the U.S. team won the Ryder Cup in 2016, he famously posed, shrugging, while his teammates embraced their significant others for a celebratory kiss.) Fast-forward a few years, when Rickie and his good friend Justin Thomas had a day off from practice ahead of the U.S. Open at Shinnecock, so they decided to explore Long Island with Allison. “At the end of the day, we were the only people on one of the beaches, and Rickie asked Justin to take a picture of us,” Allison recalls. “After a couple of photos, I looked over and Rickie was down on one knee with a big smile on his face.”
They Wanted a Destination Wedding
Originally, they planned on getting married in the Bahamas, at Baker’s Bay in the Sea of Abaco. “Both of us wanted a destination wedding—a real vacation and getaway for our guests,” Allison says. “We knew it was hurricane season but decided to take our chances, as the last couple of years had been relatively mild.”
Moving the Wedding to Cabo
Exactly one month out from the wedding, Hurricane Dorian hit the Bahamas. “The impact on the islands, their residents, and our friends in the Abacos was heartbreaking,” Allison says. “Our friends at Discovery Land Company also saw tremendous loss at Baker’s Bay and its surrounding areas, and they still managed to reach out and offer us a venue at one of their properties in Cabo. We were very lucky, as we ended up with the most hospitable crew and perfect weather at El Dorado Golf & Beach Club and Chileno Bay Golf and Beach Club in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Elena Damy and her crew out of Cabo and our event planner, Marcy Blum of Marcy Blum Associates were miracle workers and helped us create an even more amazing setting with florals and decor, somehow all at the last minute.”
Allison’s Beachy Bridal Style
The dress search was much less fraught. Allison wanted something simple and timeless, and she found exactly that in a look by Elizabeth Fillmore. “I tried on so many gorgeous dresses that I absolutely loved, but the one I wore worked perfectly with the venue and setup of the wedding,” she says. “When we saw the veil, I couldn’t get it out of my mind because it was simple yet added such a delicate and ethereal yet decorative touch to it.” Carachele Tyvan was flown out from Los Angeles to create natural hair and makeup looks all weekend long. “She helped create the perfect aesthetic for each night and made that part absolutely effortless on my end,” Allison remembers. “And Gabrielle [Jaworskyi, an event producer at Marcy Blum Associates] and Marcy helped me find a super-simple yet unique pair of earrings from Danielle Frankel.”
Rickie’s Low Key Groom Style
As noted in Vogue Weddings, Rickie looked at a number of suiting options before ultimately deciding to go with Ralph Lauren. “You could say that J.T. helped set that up a little bit,” he admits. “Eric Smith at their New York flagship store worked with me to pick out my blue suit and made sure the fit was right, as I wouldn’t be able to do a second fitting. He nailed it!” Rickie finished off the look with a plain white Vince V-neck shirt and white Buscemi Lyndon shoes. “I wanted to keep things simple and clean, as the wedding was on the beach.”
Sunset Ceremony on the Beach
The ceremony was held shortly before sunset, with margaritas waiting for guests upon arrival. With only 48 people in attendance, the couple didn’t have a bridal party—almost everyone there was either immediate family or friends they would have considered bridesmaids and groomsmen, along with their significant others. They skipped a “first look” too, opting to see each other for the first time at the ceremony. “I’ve always looked forward to that moment walking down the aisle,” Allison reveals. “It was pretty incredible to see him out there smiling and all of our close friends and family looking back.” The couple’s friend Ryan Good kept the service sweet and succinct.
Ceremony on the Beach, Cabo Style
Elena Damy designed a dramatic ceremony setting using a two-tiered, vault-inspired wooden arch and an aisle lined with pampas grass. The floral arches were covered in beautiful pastel roses and delicate greenery.
From Ceremony to Celebration
Afterward, hamachi, edamame, and tuna taco hors d’oeuvres led into dinner, and then it was time for dancing. “It was an amazing night,” Allison adds. “From our friend Kelley James and his band playing a surprise performance to our friend Jill singing ‘3AM’ by Matchbox 20, to Gryffin making our entire party dance like no one was watching, it was incredible!”
They Danced the Night Away!
The reception went until 2:00 a.m., so there was no need for an after-party. “We ended up doing the cake the next morning,” Allison notes. “We were all too into the dancing!”
