Sanjay & Yogeeta’s Sangeet Gets the Party Started
SANJAY AND YOGEETA’S wedding at the Hilton Los Cabos Beach and Golf Resort was so amazing, from start-to-finish! that we can’t wait to share each part of the wedding celebration with you. Later, when we get the photographers’ photos, which we know will be AH-MAZING! we will share those as well as they tell the complete wedding story for the family. For now, we’d love to share the glamorous all-white and gold ballroom Elena Damy designed for Sanjay and Yogeeta’s pre-wedding party… the traditional Sangeet!
Expertly planned and coordinated to the last detail by our very own Team Elena Damy wedding planners, they did a fabulous job managing the event. Working closely with the hard-working culinary and catering teams at the Hilton Los Cabos, Team Elena Damy made the bride and groom’s dream celebration come to life, one party, one day at a time.
Here’s what a Sangeet symbolizes… and how it happens!
The Sangeet is one of the many pre-wedding gatherings that take place prior to the actual Hindu, Punjabi, or Gujurati wedding ceremonies. Above is our dear bride, Yogeeta, looking gorgeous and ready to join the party!
The Sangeet is where the party begins!!!
The word Sangeet actually translates to ‘sung together’ from Sanskrit. ‘Gaun’, another word used to describe the event, means ‘songs’ or ‘to sing’ in Hindi. Traditionally celebrated in the Punjab regions of India, this ceremony has been adopted by many other regions as a form of celebration for the wedding to come the next day. The event is formally known to comprise only female attendees from both sides of the family, however, modern times have allowed the men of the families to join in the party. Unlike the religious ceremonies surrounding the wedding, specifically the rituals in the wedding ceremony itself, the Sangeet’s only purpose is to celebrate the happiness and joy surrounding the couple.
Everyone performs for the bride and groom!
The Sangeet is all about the fun, so, of course, that means family and friends perform dances and sing songs for and to the couple. Songs by the elder female members of the family can be sung in unison with the bride as the focal point, and a BIG (and, in this case, glossy white) dance floor is a must! The female members from both sides of the family sing traditional songs pertaining to the bride and groom. And then there’s the free-flowing advice that comes in jokes, funny dances, and songs sharing tips on how to have a successful marriage. It’s the ultimate “rehearsal dinner” as the families have a light-hearted and laid-back opportunity to get to know each other prior to the big wedding day. Below, our groom Sanjay, greeting family with his lovely bride-to-be, Yogeeta!
The decor was vibrant, soft and inviting.
For this joyous, free-flowing celebration, Creative Director and Lead Floral Designer, our dear Elena Damy, designed the traditional Sangeet in the grand ballroom at the Hilton Los Cabos. The entire ballroom was draped in gathered white fabric, and modern custom-made Elena Damy banquettes, white sofas and ottomans, cushions, and pillows surrounded a giant, glossy white dance floor. The bride and groom’s special seating area was placed directly opposite to the DJ booth. The dance floor and DJ booth, as well as other decorative details, had a bold, gold graphic design creatively displayed for a strong statement. Low and high cocktail tables were placed around the perimeter of the space, some with sexy gold chairs, allowing guests to perch and move throughout the night.
Food and flowers, oh yeah!
Well, you can’t have a rockin’ Sangeet without plenty of delicious food and drink, and the Hilton brought out their AAA game! Including the Pani Puri, and other traditional Indian favorites. As for the flowers, Elena and her floral design team layered rich golds, oranges, whites, and greens throughout the entire environment to bring color and texture to cocktail tables, bars, food stations, and lounge areas. More gold was included into the design in candles, vases, containers, and decorative accessories.
Team Elena Damy thanks Team Hilton!
