Sea Turtles, Spirit Animals of Los Cabos
SEA TURTLES ARE THE SPIRIT ANIMALS OF LOS CABOS, maybe even all of Mexico! They symbolize endurance, protection, good fortune, hope, and happiness. Powerful, graceful creatures that many of our clients are inspired by when they choose Baja California as their wedding location. But many people are unaware of the sea turtles’ long history. Would you believe the first record of their existence dates to the beginning of the Mesozoic Era? That’s the period that began 225 million years ago and ended 65 million years ago, during which life flourished on our planet and on land. Amazing!
WE ARE EXTREMELY FORTUNATE HERE IN LOS CABOS to be home to five of the seven species of sea turtles found in the world. Although the turtles are here in Cabo San Lucas and other places across Mexico throughout the year, they make their nests and lay their eggs from August through November. After 45 to 60 days, the baby turtles are born with the instinct to return to the sea, but sadly only one in 1,000 actually make the journey to adulthood successfully, making their survival a precious feat, and one to be celebrated when it happens. Volunteering with Eco Plan AC, a local Baja organization dedicated to saving the sea turtle, can be extremely rewarding and we honor their dedication.
TODAY, THREATENED BY MAN (pollution, fishing nets, food source, boating) and a dwindling ecosystem, the sea turtles require human help to survive. Yes, we have contributed to their decline and abuse, but we also have the power to help them now, and we must! We want them to continue to swim the oceans of our planet for another millennium, right? These gentle reptiles of our past inspire our hope for a better future.
AS YOU CAN SEE from the beautiful lead image, as well as immediately below, from photographer Ashley Bosnick, The Resort at Pedregal has embraced the sea turtle as their company logo and philosophical symbol. Natural-looking sculptures of sea turtles can be found all over the luxury resort and serve as a sweet reminder of how beautiful these creatures are to us all.
